The Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC) staff in Washington, DC is a major defender of the Midwest and the Great Lakes, advocating for public transportation, walking, biking, transforming the power grid, and accelerating the shift to renewable energy. The ELPC works to shape federal leadership on climate change, clean energy, clean air, the Great Lakes, and clean water. The mathematical fact sheet on the carbon impact of e-bikes helps ensure that federal decision-making takes into account environmental concerns in the Midwest. Parrish Bergquist, an adjunct professor at the McCourt School, studies environmental policy and politics in the United States.
He teaches classes in environmental politics and statistics, and helps students apply theories and ideas from political science, sociology, and economics to many public policy topics. When I was in my early twenties, I became convinced that climate change is the most serious existential challenge facing the world. My experience of living in Honduras as a Peace Corps volunteer showed me that people in certain parts of the world were already starting to feel its effects, but they had very little to do with the cause of the problem. This inequity between causes and impacts seemed quite disturbing to me, so I decided to dedicate my career to trying to solve this problem. One thing that gives me hope is the surge of energy being organized and channeled by some large social movement organizations.
They are constantly learning how to involve people more effectively, meaningfully, and sustainably in promoting smarter policies at state and local levels. It's much easier to get involved in politics at these levels than at the federal level. I am also somewhat optimistic that many corporate actors seem to recognize what is happening with climate change and are taking their own steps to reduce their contributions or even pushing for climate action. The Midwest is a key player in national politics when it comes to environmental policy. The ELPC is a major defender of the Midwest and the Great Lakes both in its own country and on the national stage before Congress and federal administrative agencies. The ELPC works hard to shape federal leadership on climate change, clean energy, clean air, the Great Lakes, and clean water.
